Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Bermuda has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Caribbean Cable and Telecommunications Association (CCTA) yesterday after being nominated by Bermuda CableVision.

Patrina O'Connor-Paynter, fund manager and marketing communications director for BBBS Bermuda, was pleased by the nomination, the charity's fourth consecutive nomination for the grant.

"BBBS Bermuda is really appreciative of the continued support from Bermuda CableVision," said Ms. O'Connor-Paynter. "Although part of an international organisation, we are financed independently and we rely on the generosity of local individuals and corporations so we can continue the work.

"Receiving this grant for the fourth year in a row is a tremendous help in financing our work."

BBBS Bermuda couples children, primarily from single parent homes, with adult mentors, who serve as both friends and role models for the children.

The CCTA Community Charities Programme grant was established in 1993, and has awarded over $200,000 to various Caribbean charities. The programme received 19 nominations this year, and each was awarded a grant.

Edward Cherwinski, chief financial officer at Bermuda CableVision, was pleased to see the charity win the grant.

"It's mentoring programme is proven to help young people stay in school, away from drugs and violence, which in turn strengthens our community," said Mr. Cherwinski.
