Minister throws `Safety Net' at issue of teen pregnancy
Bermuda is aiming to reduce the number of teen mothers in the future with a new initiative to educate young girls, Health Minister Nelson Bascome said yesterday in the House of Assembly. Speaking about Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month this May, he said a new initiative entitled `Safety Net' had been launched, which aimed to better educate young girls on the issues surrounding pregnancy, sex and motherhood, as well as the usual after-care programmes.

Primary students to get sex education
A rise in pregnancies of girls in their early teens has resulted in Teen Services holding pregnancy prevention classes in primary schools. Teen Services Director Michelle Wade said on Tuesday there were 13 teenage mothers under the age of 16-years-old in 2004 � one mother more than a Registrar General 2004 Report tabled in the House of Assembly on Friday.

Young teen pregnancies fall, but awareness to remain high
The number of girls aged between 13 and 16 who are getting pregnant has fallen, new figures show. The figure was released at the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month official proclamation. But Mrs. Vivlyn Cooper, Teen Services Board chairperson, said the spotlight should not just be on girls as it takes two people to create a human being.

The Director of Teen Services spoke about some of the programmes and issues in the agency yesterday at the weekly Hamilton Rotary Club meeting. Michelle Wade gave a talk about the agency celebrating its 40th anniversary later this year and she gave a background history of Teen Services as well as a detailed explanation of the programmes it offers including the Continuation School, Teen Haven and counselling.

PRIDE Bermuda evolving rapidly – executive director Judith Burgess::
The anti drug slogan "Just say No" may have worked in the 1980s but drug prevention programmes have had to evolve to meet today's needs, according to PRIDE. Judith Burgess, who is the Executive Director of PRIDE Bermuda, said over the past 18 months the charity has evolved from focusing solely on drug prevention to setting up programmes to dissuade anti-social behaviour. In October last year it began teaching CARON life skills classes in school rooms across the Island.
