The 'usurper' named Obama
WASHINGTON — From the beginning, Hillary Clinton has campaigned as if the Democratic nomination were hers by divine right. That's why she is falling short — and that's why she should be persuaded to quit now, rather than later, before her majestic sense of entitlement splits the party along racial lines. If that sounds harsh, look at the argument she made Wednesday, in an interview with USA Today, as to why she should be the nominee instead of Barack Obama.

An opportunity for America
Even in the midst of the continuing global financial turmoil and a US Presidential election campaign that keeps reaching new lows in terms of gutter politics, there is still a ray of hope that America might be ready to march into a new day of history. As we enter the final weeks of the Presidential campaign, a man of colour, Barack Obama, holds an edge in the race for the White House for the first time.

Why Palin has the Democrats running scared
A laska Governor Sarah Palin electrified the Republican National Convention with her acceptance speech two weeks ago. And why not? The GOP vice presidential candidate is attractive (hold the accusations of sexism, please), articulate, poised, enthusiastic, homespun, a fresh face with a girl-next-door appeal. She's everything, in other words, that John McCain is not. After watching the McCain campaign sleepwalk through the summer, the Democrats can't get their arms around the Palin phenomenon.

Counting the cost of campaign ads on TV networks
NEW YORK (AP) — Savannah Guthrie filed a hard-hitting report on NBC's "Nightly News" recently questioning the truth of some McCain-Palin campaign statements on the "bridge to nowhere" and Sarah Palin's foreign travel. Guthrie's story challenged the claims in one of McCain's TV commercials. A few minutes later, "Nightly News" ran one of McCain's campaign spots during a commercial break. It made for an odd juxtaposition, one not unique to NBC.

Premier is ready to speak to Obama if necessary
Premier Ewart Brown believes a Presidential row over tax loopholes that has shone an international spotlight on Bermuda will 'go away soon'. He said he was in touch with the Barack Obama camp and said if necessary he would try and see him personally to explain Bermuda's position.

Breaking News: Obama's Bermuda video
Bermuda today finds itself at the centre of a row between Presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain. A pledge to protect tax breaks for American corporations by Senator McCain made while visiting Bermuda last year has been used by the Obama camp for a campaign video.

Are you up to the challenge of making the tough decisions?
The hope didn't last long, at least for some. Barack Obama wasn't President a day before we were brought smack back to the harsh realities of our economic times. The Dow Jones industrial average plunged more than 330 points, or four percent, on Inauguration Day. It's not just the stock market that continues to deliver bad economic news. Foreclosure filings soared by more than 81 percent in 2008, according to a yearend report by RealtyTrac,

Hope defeats cynicism
Barack Obama's victory in last night's US Presidential election is rightly being celebrated not only in the US but in Bermuda and around the world. For people of African descent, this is an extraordinary moment, a triumph of hope over cynicism. That perhaps is the most "transforming" factor in this election. Again, the United States, regardless of its flaws, has shown that if an individual, in this case one born of a black Kenyan father and a white American mother,

TV: Is the campaign coverage fair?
NEW YORK (AP) — Television news' royalty will fly in to meet Barack Obama during this week's overseas trip: CBS chief anchor Katie Couric in Jordan on Tuesday, ABC's Charles Gibson in Israel on Wednesday and NBC's Brian Williams in Germany on Thursday.
